A Day at the Vet

Sometimes we wake up and the day has its own agenda. Such was the case this past Saturday when our dog had to be taken to Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) in Georgetown first thing in the morning. We had a list of "to do's," all of which had to be swept aside in favor of caring for our little pooch.

Going to any emergency room can be grim - filled with overworked health care staff and frustrated patients. Just walking into those spaces can be very non-healing experience!

VEG was different. Since it was early-ish by Washington, D.C. standards, there were no other dogs yet. There was a circle of women, at least one of whom was a veterinarian - Dr. P (who taught us what the initial stood for), technicians and assistants. There was one big open and bright space. It was a diverse crowd. Everyone we met was super friendly, conversational and understanding.

As an organization development professional, I'm always attuned to the vibe in a work space. In federal agencies, which dominate our local economy, it can be a mixed bag. Sometimes people are counting the days to retirement. Other times there's a malaise or tension in the air because of the hierarchy and power plays.

As it turns out, the lesson of the day came not from our initial plans, but because we were directed into an environment of energy and hope. Good people abound. In these times of political tension and fear, it's nice to happen upon a team which cultivates community. It's a reminder that inspiration often happen at the micro level.

While our dog was getting tests done, we also snuck away to Bread & Chocolate, a Washington favorite with a friendly staff and delicious birchermüesli. When we got back to VEG, we got the good news that the dog was going to be okay. It was, all-in-all, a morning well-spent.
